It’s snowing in the Alps!

Fieberbrunn - Austria

It’s the New Year and along with the standard fresh start you can also expect fresh snow. The weather websites are unanimous. Everywhere we look right now snow is either falling or it is forecast to fall, and in large quantities too – we’re very excited! It has been lightly snowing in Switzerland and Austria since Monday but today we’re forecast for significant and widespread snowfall right across the Alps. In some parts you can even expect to use your powder skis this weekend.

Switzerland is a big winner when it comes to the fresh snowfall. The average size of the snow dump is expected to reach 25cm. And we’ve already got powdery conditions springing up in the Jungfrau region where you’ll find the resorts of Grindelwald and Wengen. The current snowfall is building on the 30cm that’s already there, and this is only set to increase over the coming days.

Elsewhere in Switzerland we’re hearing exciting reports of heavy snowfall in the northern resorts, such as Davos and Klosters. The snow here is forecast to continue tomorrow with further dumps towards the end of the weekend and the beginning of next week. Our rep in Davos, Stephen has sent us this great view from his favourite chairlift:

The southern resorts of Switzerland are set to get a snow boost too. Zermatt which is already reporting good conditions is forecast for several snow dumps over the coming week.

Today is a snowy day across the entirety of Austria, with upward of 30cm of snow expected, dropping the snowline deep into the valleys. In the Arlberg we’ve already had 10cm-15cm of snowfall, and the prediction for even more snow has got our reps in Lech, St Christoph and St Anton very excited indeed. Simon, our St Christoph representative, told us yesterday that the ‘whole of the Arlberg was transformed overnight’. There is now some amazing skiing available in the resort:

In Zell am See we are getting ready for powder this weekend as our representative, Sarah, explains in her latest Snow Report from the centre of the resort:

And look at this, our latest Snow Report from Obergurgl. The conditions out there right now are perfect:

Beyond Switzerland and Austria we’ve got overnight snow showers predicted across several French resorts including Chamonix and Serre Chevalier (where the Ski Club of Great Britain have reported excellent skiing in their latest snow overview). And of course the high resorts such as the Val Thorens, Meribel, Courchevel, Val d’Isere and Tignes continue to offer consistent, snow-sure conditions.

In their latest Snow Report our representatives in Alpe d’Huez, Sarah and Josie, are preparing to welcome fresh snow on Thursday morning:

And the long term forecast for France is definitely something to shout about. Snow storms are predicted for a large portion of next week, with sizable dumps expected on 10 January. In Les Arcs the snow clouds are already rolling in, with 4cm of snowfall expected just this week.

And in Italy too we’re benefiting from some recent snowfall. Cervinia and Kronplatz should receive some decent snow today and tomorrow. In La Villa, where the snow conditions are already excellent (check out Franko’s latest Snow Report below for more information) further snow is predicted through tonight and into tomorrow.

The snow conditions across the Alps are only getting better this season. So if you haven’t booked a ski holiday for this year yet (or are considering a second one) start checking the snow forecasts. You’ll see that there are plenty of excellent places to ski right now. This winter is only just getting started!
