Italy, Lake Garda
A holiday in Desenzano combines a picturesque lakeside resort setting with the vibrant atmosphere of a thriving Italian community. Social life is focused on the many bars, cafés, pizzerias and restaurants in the historic centre and on the pedestrianised shopping area. Narrow streets lead up to the medieval castle that overlooks the town and offers panoramic views of the lake. Desenzano has two harbours and two public beaches. The resort has the best ferry and hydrofoil services on the lake so the main lakeside towns, including Garda, Peschiera and Sirmione, are very accessible. Bus and train connections are excellent and Verona, Venice and Padua are within easy reach.
The Wine Festival in Bardolino (October) brings the summer season on Lake Garda to a close. Five days celebrating the new harvest of the grapes from which the famous Bardolino wines are made. Plenty of opportunity to taste the wines and sample regional food specialties, all accompanied by musical concerts ending in a spectacular firework display over the lake. Bardolino is easily accessed by ferry from Desenzano.
A night at the opera in the ancient arena in Verona must surely be one of life’s great experiences even if you’re not an opera buff. The 2017 programme (23 June - 27 August) sees the return of the all-time favourite Aida by Verdi loved for its lavish scenery and costumes. But there are also performances of Rigoletto and Nabucco by Verdi as well as Tosca and Madame Butterfly by Puccini. If you are staying in any of the main resorts on Lake Garda, such as Peschiera, we can book most performances (listed on the Verona opera page) and transport to and from Verona is included in addition to your opera ticket.
